Delightful Surprises

When I was a child, I remember my excitement when purchasing cupcakes from a vast array of wonderfully decorated cupcakes that each mother had baked for a fundraiser for my school, so I thought it would be fun to have our own cupcake sale here at home one winter morning. When the sky is bleak outside, my children’s faces will be all aglow as they look upon a vast assortment of cupcakes from which to choose for themselves.

The night before our cupcake sale, I will bake yellow and chocolate cupcakes, ice them with tinted vanilla and chocolate icing, and then decorate them with a variety of toppings—shaved chocolate, coconut, sprinkles, iced flowers….

These I will display on a very large silver serving tray with a pretty penned sign: “CUPCAKE SALE, 5 cents each.” The children will then be instructed to go back to their beds and look under their pillows to see what the Sugar Plum Fairy left them. Each of the children will find 10 shiny new nickels with which to purchase their cupcakes. The children will then be able to purchase 10 cupcakes each—one for lunch and two for dinner each day for several days running.

I can hardly wait as I anticipate that they will enjoy the Cupcake Sale as much as I did when I was a child.
