Make Your Time Count
Heart to Heart
time      This past month in our home, in others’ homes, and at church, I visited with other like-minded homeschooling keepers of their homes. Each of us felt that our time needed to count, so we invested in each other’s lives as we shared valuable information on doctrine, theological books we had recently read, discipling our children, covenantal families, recipes, gardening, canning and freezing, weaving, knitting, sewing, decorating, husbandry, the economical management of our resources, being better helpmeets, recent legislation, political agendas, God’s sovereignty… The list of constructive, useful, beneficial information was exhaustive as we blessed one another with the wisdom that God had bestowed upon us.
Are your conversations focused on the things that are important, essential, crucial, and vital to your duty as keepers of your homes? One day we will give an account of every word spoken and every word received. “Be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise men, making the most of your time because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15-17).
Profiting from the Word (Chapter 2: The Scriptures and God) by A. W. Pink
“The prominent place which sport now has in the nation’s life, the excessive love of pleasure, the abolition of home-life…are so many symptoms of the same disease which brought about the downfall and death of the empires of Babylon , Persia , Greece and Rome .”
“God can only be known by means of a supernatural revelation of Himself… ‘The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned’ 1 Cor. 2:14…Most of the ‘religion’ of the day is but a touching up of ‘old Adam.’ It is merely a garnishing of sepulchers full of corruption. It is outward ‘form.’ he Jews were very orthodox. At that time (of Christ) they were free from idolatry….the Law was expounded, Jehovah was worshipped. And yet Christ said to them… ‘Ye neither know me, nor my father’ John 8:19… ‘He is your God. Yet ye have not known him’ John 8:54,55. And mark it well, this is said to a people who had the Scriptures, searched them diligently, and venerated them as God’s Word! They were well acquainted with God theoretically, but a spiritual knowledge of Him they had not.”
“Fruit reveals the character…God actually dwelling in the heart…transforms the life…Having been made a ‘partaker of the divine nature’ 2 Peter 1:4, he necessarily loves God, loves the things of God, loves what God loves…he hates what God hates. This supernatural experience is wrought in him by the Spirit of God…by means of the Word of God. The Spirit never works apart from the Word, by the Word He quickens. By that Word He produces conviction of sin. By that Word He sanctifies.”
“The great controversy between the Creator and the creature has been whether He or they should be God, whether His wisdom or theirs should be the guiding principle of their actions, whether His will or theirs should be supreme. That which brought about the fall of Lucifer was his resentment at being in subjection to his Maker: ‘Thou has said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God…I will be like the most High’ Isaiah 14:13,14. The lie of the serpent which lured our first parents to their destruction was, ‘Ye shall be as gods’ Genesis 3:5. And ever since then the heart-sentiment of the natural man has been, ‘Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. What is the Almighty that we should serve him?’ Job 21:14,15.”
“True conversion is a tearing down of every idol, a renouncing of the empty vanities of…the world… and taking God for…our ruler…His rightful dominion over us…The converted yield themselves unto God…as ‘instruments of righteousness unto God’ Romans 6:13….To own God is to give Him the throne of our hearts. (Having a) fear of God’s majesty. ‘Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him’ Psalm 33:8…Of the wicked it is written, ‘There is no fear of God before their eyes’ Romans 3:18. They have no realization of His majesty, no concern for His authority, no respect for His commandments, no alarm that He shall judge them.”
“‘The fear of the Lord is to hate evil’ Proverbs 8:13. ‘By the fear of the Lord men depart from evil’ Proverbs 16:6…The truly regenerate soul is afraid of disobeying and defying God….Sin is high treason, spiritual anarchy…rebellion against His will. Sin is having our own way…God’s promise to His covenant people is, ‘I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God’ Hebrews 8:10… ‘If a man love me, he will keep my words’ John 14:23… ‘Hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments’ 1 John 2:3.”
“Teaching which lowers God’s authority, which ignores His commands, which affirms that the Christian is, in no sense, under the Law, is of the Devil…Christ has redeemed His people from the curse of the Law and not from the command of it; He has saved them from the wrath of God, but not from His government…1 Corinthians 9:21, expressly affirms that we are ‘under the law to Christ.’ ‘He that saith he abideth in him, ought himself so to walk, even as he walked’ 1 John 2:6. And how did Christ walk? In perfect obedience to God; in complete subjection to His law, honoring and obeying it in thought and word and deed. He came not to destroy the Law but to fulfill it. Mathew 5:17.”
(Darrick Thomas says: “You have heard the saying that God hates the sin but loves the sinner; but consider that it is the sinner He sends to hell.”)
“Whosoever or whomsoever a man most trusts in is his ‘god’…health, wealth, self, friends…that which characterizes all the unregenerate is that they lean upon an arm of flesh…that in which a man most delights is his ‘god.’”
“Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside Thee” Psalm 73:25.
“The language of the saints is, ‘Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation’ Habakkuk 3:17,18…It is natural to murmur when things go wrong, it is supernatural to hold our peace, Leviticus 10:3. It is natural to be disappointed when our plans miscarry, it is supernatural to bow to His appointments. It is natural to want our own way, it is supernatural to say, ‘Not my will, but thine be done’…thus the heart is kept in ‘perfect peace’ as the mind is stayed on Him, Isaiah 26:3. Here, then, is another sure test: if your Bible study is teaching you that God’s way is best, if it is causing you to submit unrepiningly…if you are enabled to give thanks for all things, Ephesians 5:20, then are you profiting indeed.”
